About FLY Dance Company

FLY is an all-male contemporary dance company from Houston consisting of four talented young men under the direction of choreographer Kathy Wood. The company is known for its high-energy performances with clever staging to a variety of music including classical, jazz, pop, hip hop, experimental, drumming, and live sound effects. The Propellerheads, Debussy, James Brown, Michael Jackson, The Flamingoes, Nat King Cole, and Vivaldi are a few of the music's artists and composers.

Labeled an artistic phenomenon, FLY crosses street dance with classical choreographic principles. Their technique is hip hopvery creative, gymnastic, and highly masculine. FLY's concerts are clean-cut, wholesome artistry designed to cross all audience boundariesyoung and old, men and women, sophisticated and unsophisticatedwith pieces combining styles and cultures to reflect contemporary Americana.

FLY's beginning dates back to 1993, when Kathy met and recruited hip hop dancers performing at a Houston street festival. Kathy began an experiment combining hip hop movement with classical music by Vivaldi resulting in a piece called Out of Context. This piece was an immediate success marking the beginning of the ten-year process developing the touring group that FLY is today.

FLY has toured extensively throughout the U.S. with trips to Mexico and Europe. The 2003-2004 season included a ten-performance engagement at the Kennedy Center's Theatre Lab and over fifty more concerts and 100+ outreach presentations in 18 states. For the 2004-2005 season, FLY will offer an evening length concert performed to recorded music, a live symphony pops concert, a winter holiday concert, and shorter, customized shows suitable for youth and family audiences, dance festivals, and corporate entertainment.

FLY's five community outreach offerings, we believe, are unmatched in variety and effectivenessparticularly with at-risk populations. These presentations are frequently and most effectively booked prior to FLY's concerts with the dual benefit of community service and increased concert attendance.
